Das EU Horizont 2020 Projekt ESMERALDA (Enhancing ecosystem services mapping for policy and decision making), welches vom PhyGeo koordiniert wurde, befasste sich mit Bewertungen und Kartierungen von Ökosystemen und ihren Leistungen. Solche komplexen Bewertungen erfordern transdisziplinäre Ansätze, die neben biophysikalischen (ökologischen) Werten auch soziale und ökonomische Werte integrieren. "I am an ecologist and would be happier if people were convinced just by having nice nature and lots of species – but this is not the way the world works at the moment, and usually the most convincing argument is money", sagt Benjamin Burkhard in einem kürzlich veröffentlichten Interview im EU Research & Innovation Magazine „Horizon“.
