Study project ‘Landscape System Analysis Northern Finland’ in the Master's programme Landscape Sciences

As in previous years, the practical part of the study project "Landscape System Analysis Northern Finland" in the Master of Landscape Sciences took place in the boreal and subarctic regions of Northern Europe.

A total of 27 students from Leibniz Universität Hannover as well as from our ERASMUS partner universities Joensuu/Finland (UEF) and Tartu/Estonia (EMU) participated this year in the field course supervised by Benjamin Burkhard and Alexander Störmer (both LUH/PhyGeo), Timo Kumpula and Franziska Wolff (both UEF) as well as Thaisa Fernandes Bergamo (EMU). Again, this course took place within the framework of the Erasmus Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), which provided financial support to each student.

Applied landscape ecological field methods included UAV remote sensing with different systems, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), GNSS satellite positioning, land use, lichen and vegetation mapping, ecosystem services evaluations and peat investigation with a chamber drill. The collected data will be analyzed by the participating students in the second part of the study project in the winter semester 2024/25.
